Preliminary design of the water-cooled Liberty was accomplished between Tuesday, May 29, 1917 and Thursday, May 31, 1917 by Jesse Vincent of the Packard Motor Car Company and Elbert Hall of the Hall-Scott Motor Car Co. They designed a series of engines intended to extract maximum power from the minimum weight that could be mass produced in 4-, 6-, 8- and 12-cylinder versions, using proven components and concepts. The first 8-cylinder engine was delivered in early July, 1917. Packard, Lincoln, Ford, General Motors, Nordyke and Morman delivered 20,842 of the 12-cylinder model, which was also built in Britain and Russia. Many aircraft were powered by Liberties, but most were built for the de Havilland DH-4. The Liberty 12 displaced 1,649 inĀ³ (27l), weighted 844 lb (383kg), and produced 449 hp at 1,940 rpm.
