Lawrance J-1

First in a long line of Wright Whirlwind engines the Lawrance J-1 was the result of a collaboration between Charles L. Lawrance, the U.S. Navy and Wright Aeronautical. It was the first successful high-horsepower air-cooled radial built in the U.S. When used in aircraft such as the Curtiss TS-1 the J-1 weighed less, had superior performance, and was easier to maintain than competing water-cooled engines. Lawrance won the 1927 Collier Trophy for development of radial air-cooled aircraft engines.
