By the time the 1,000-hp Lycoming XO-1230 was first flown the requirement for 1,000 hp engines had grown to 2,000 hp. Lycoming responded by joining two O-1230s on a common crankcase. The resulting XH-2470 was extensively flown in the Vultee XP-54. The XH-2470-7 produced 2,300 hp at 3,300 rpm and weighed 2,834 lb.
