Design of the Bristol Hercules began in 1935. A 14-cylinder air-cooled sleeve-valve engine displacing 2,360 in ³ (38.7l), the Hercules VI produced 1,585 hp at 2,900 rpm. It was used in the Short S.29 Stirling III, Avro 683 Lancaster II, Handley Page H.P.61, Halifax III, and Bristol 156 Beaufithter. The Hercules also powered several commercial aircraft, including the Vickers 623 Vicking IA, Short S.45 Solent 3, and Bristol 170 Freighter. Bristol built more of the Hercules type than any other engine.
