There's not a lot of info on this fascinating motor in the lterature. However, members can learn quite a lot by going to the US Patent Office website at www.uspto.gov (Click 'patents'; click 'search'; click 'number search') and typing in 2468976.

This should bring up a fifteen page document describing the IV-2220 written by the designers, Alexander Herreshoff & Wade Lamb in 1942 entitled, "An Inverted V-type Engine."

The five pages of drawings are very useful in understanding this (overly?) complex engine and they include a good T.S. of the engine and a very good L.S. of the central region to show the central power take-off gearing.

The engine was characterized by the number of complicated castings used for the crankcase and cylinder heads, all designed, as the authors explain, to ensure rigidity for such a long engine.

Of the text, it is really only necessary to print out the first five pages unless you particularly want to read the endless "Claims"!

Does anyone know of any other sources of detailed info on this engine?
