Trying to identify this motor.. probably 1920s
Dual distributors 4 carbs. 8cyl.
It has been mounted on a lower unit for potential marine use as a race boat engine but was never finished.

Probably an old aircraft/ drone engine

Displacement: 148 CID Flat Eight Marine engine
Manufacturer: Unknown
Origin: Unknown
Cylinders: 8 horizontally opposed in two banks of four
Bore: 2.5 inches
Stroke: 3.75 inches
Valves: 2 per cylinder. Actuated by roller rocker arms
Valve Springs: Unusual leaf springs. 10 per set arched over a hardened rod
Camshafts: 2) two piece. One for each bank of cylinders driven
by shafts and bevel gears off the center of the crankshaft

Crankshaft: Hollow with internal oil lines, appears to be silver soldered
steel tubing

Crankcase: Vertically split with detachable cylinder heads
All aluminum, steel liners and removable bulkheads top and
Bottom

Connection Rods: Unusual configuration
One tubular rod and one beamed rod
Both on the same journal (fork and blade).
Noter
Tubular rod is flanged and bolts to a split bronze bearing
No offset in cylinders


Oil System:
Dry sump with gear type mechanical pumps one for each bank of cylinders - driven off the The lower unit housing is the wet sump with integral basket strainer

Ignition:
One plug per cylinder, _however, none came with the motor but the holes are larger than 14
2 Mallory dual point distributors - one driven off the top of each camshaft

2. Mallory DSM coils

Carburation:
The motor came with two systems:
1. Four (4) Zeniths (2 for each bank of cylinders)
2. Two (2) Winfields (Model SR BU); the Winfields have consecutive serial numbers SRB 3667 & 3668 Starter:
Eclipse Aviation Engine Starter (inertia).
SER # M2048A #160 (last patent date May 26, 1925 - determined by researching patent #1,539,075).

Dimensions:
32" rocker cover to rocker cover
The block is 16" high and 8" wide with an overall height from the top of the starter to the bottom of the lower unit of 421

Weight:
Engine less lower unit and starter weighs only 122 lbs and with accessories weighs approximately 175 lbs.

Lower Unit:
Tractor type with attached rudder that is actuated by a worm gear
Propeller is missing

Identification:
No markings on the motor! There are foundry marks on the connecting rods and cam followers, an arrowhead with the letter "D" located in the middle and the number "21" and "24" respectively.

Vintage:
Most of the accessory items (starter, carbs, distributors, etc.) date the motor to the mid 30's

"possibly"? a "Vertical Inline Power" engine

ie likely the 1957 Fageol VIP 88 inboard / outboard marine engine, using two 44CU Crossley auto engine blocks joined together, but I can't find a good photo online to prove it or rule it out

or the later 1959 Crompton development of the same engine?
