Can anyone explain why the early models had slots at the aft edge, as well as why they disappeared on later models? Someone asked me in comments on a YouTube video, so I’m asking around. Graham White’s R-4360 book came close to discussing it (gear case cooling and propeller anti-ice), but no discussion of the function of the slots.

Thanks!
