Having been in the magazine editing and publishing business for 30 years, I often ran into old photographs or articles that I wanted to reproduce. Even when the copyright has expired, it is only common courtesy to contact the writer or photographer for permission. Stories and photographs were often sold for one-time use only, the original rights remaining with the creator. A diligent search (via the creator or the publisher) will usually turn up some connection. If not, you can opt to proceed at your own risk, but...
