The Royal Canadian Air Force Memorial Museum at CFB Trenton is restoring Handley Page Halifax A. VII NA337 which was recovered from Lake Mjosa in Norway in September 1995. It had ditched in the lake on the night of April 13, 1945. The engines are Bristol Hercules XVIs. The Hercules has sleeve valves instead of the traditional poppet valves.

Two Cylinders Removed

A piston and sleeve are visible.

Junk Heads

The junk head seals the top end of the cylinder, houses the sparking plugs, and provide a space to "hide" the sleeve ports when the piston is on the compression and power strokes.

According to Jim, "The attached photos were taken at the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa. Although the Bristol Hercules is impressive, nothing can rival the Napier Sabre!"

The Napier Sabre VII (in photo) was capable of 3500 hp @ 3850 rpm @ sea level with 20 psi boost with water/methanol
injection. The Sabre is a 24 cylinder H engine with sleeve valves. Displacement is 2240 cu in (36.65 litres).

The Bristol Hercules XVI was capable of 1715 hp @ 2900 rpm @ 6500 ft with 8.25 psi boost. The Hercules has 14 cylinders
in two rows. Displacement is 2360 cu in (38.7 litres).

(The stats are from Alec Lumsden's British Piston Aero-Engines and Their Aircraft.)
